Meet Tisa Banda from Sinda, Eastern Province, who proudly shows off the maize she planted during the winter months. Despite the droughts that impacted Zambia in 2024, her crops have flourished thanks to the skills she gained from COMACO.

Before joining COMACO, Tisa struggled with poor yields and unpredictable weather. But after receiving training on winter crops and learning how to make the most of the winter conditions, she was able to plant maize when the weather was more favourable.

With COMACO’s support, Tisa and other small-scale farmers in her community have transformed their approach to farming. Together, they’ve created a community that is now better prepared to face climate challenges.

In 2003, COMACO began working with 24 of the most well-known poachers in Luangwa Valley, Eastern Province. The goal was to stop the loss of wildlife and help people adopt better farming practices. Poachers were taught climate smart farming and supplied with high quality seeds and farming tools to help them get started. In return, they handed over their guns and snares, leaving behind poaching for a non-destructive livelihood.

Some joined willingly, drawn by the promise of a better life. Others were persuaded by traditional leadership and COMACO staff. They were shown how embracing wildlife conservation and sustainable farming could transform their future. These former poachers didn’t just stop hunting – they became champions of change, spreading the message of conservation and sensitizing others on the benefits of taking on a new way of life.

Today, COMACO works with 2,212 former poachers across Zambia. Together, they are helping to protect wildlife while building better lives for their families.

Meet Christopher Likonde, a small-scale farmer fro

Meet Christopher Likonde, a small-scale farmer from Mumbwa in Central Province. Christopher used to spend most of his income and savings on expensive fertilizers and pesticides which resulted in him struggling to make ends meet. After joining COMACO, he learned better farming methods and was introduced to Gliricidia Sepium, a versatile tree that naturally adds nutrients and returns nitrogen back to the soil.

"I advise farmers to plant Gliricidia because it has changed my life," says Christopher. "It can be used for fencing, shade, green manure, and even as a natural pesticide."

Thanks to this new knowledge, Christopher has reduced his farming costs and improved his harvests. His story shows how simple, sustainable solutions can improve yields and transform lives.

COMACO, in partnership with the Government of Zamb

COMACO, in partnership with the Government of Zambia through the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment - Zambia under the Forestry Department, launched the 2025 tree-planting campaign under the theme "Using Trees to Combat Drought, Build Food Security, and Increase Household Income."

The campaign began with the planting of Gliricidia Sepium, an agroforestry species known for enriching soil, in the field of His Royal Highness, Chief Mshawa. Speaking at the event, Chief Mshawa stated, “Since I started working with COMACO in 2014, my chiefdom has seen remarkable improvements in conservation practices. Members of my chiefdom are already experiencing the benefits through improved yields after planting Gliricidia alongside their crops.”

The guest of honour, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Eastern Province, Dr. Lewis Mwape, commended COMACO for building community resilience in the face of climate change. He highlighted the organization’s critical role in promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing food security across Eastern Province and other parts of Zambia.

With over 244 million trees already planted, COMACO is steadily progressing toward its ambitious goal of planting one billion agroforestry species. The growing support from partners, traditional leaders, and communities demonstrates a shared commitment to sustainability.

COMACO collaborates with 86 chiefdoms, working clo

COMACO collaborates with 86 chiefdoms, working closely with traditional leaders to empower 335,230 small-scale farmers in transitioning to climate smart agricultural practices. Central to this approach is agroforestry.
At a food fair in his chiefdom, Chief Chibale highlighted the importance of growing and protecting fruit trees to improve nutrition and income. He thanked COMACO, CIFOR-ICRAF, and the government for their combined efforts to address food security and nutrition.
“The knowledge gained on growing and protecting fruit trees will go a long way in ensuring improved nutrition and income generation for my people,” Chief Chibale stated, while emphasising the impact of these initiatives on his chiefdom.
The food fair focused on agroforestry and preserving indigenous foods to boost dietary diversity and provide diverse sustainable income for small-scale farmers, enhancing food security and maintaining cultural heritage.
