Sando Mwila, a member of Kamena Cooperative in Serenje, reflects on his past: "I was a poacher for over 10 years, and life was risky every day." Sando, who began poaching in 1987, said, “our lives were at constant risk from wild animal attacks and game management officers.”

COMACO’s arrival, promoting wildlife conservation, changed Sando's life. After joining COMACO in 2009, he surrendered his weapons for a sustainable livelihood. “I also helped others transform,” he shared, noting how COMACO’s empowerment programs has led many poachers to sustainable livelihoods.

“COMACO trained us in carpentry, farming, tailoring, and goat rearing, I personally benefited from carpentry, conservation farming, and beekeeping,” Sando recalled. Now with four beehives producing 5-6 buckets of honey, Sando can support himself and his family. His livelihood is proof that beekeeping is a viable and sustainable alternative.

At COMACO, we promote eco-friendly farming methods

At COMACO, we promote eco-friendly farming methods that not only safeguard the environment but also help farmers save on costly pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Central to this approach is Gliricidia sepium, a remarkable nitrogen-fixing tree that naturally enriches soil fertility.
Our 335,000 small-scale farmers are trained to interplant Gliricidia with key crops like maize, soybeans, and cowpeas, allowing the soil to retain essential nutrients—eliminating the need for expensive external inputs. This aligns with COMACO’s mission to advance agroforestry while enhancing food security and uplifting the livelihoods of small-scale farmers.

We work hand-in-hand with the Zambia Meteorologica

We work hand-in-hand with the Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) to deliver timely weather forecasts to our farmers, through our Farm Talk Radio program. This ensures they are well prepared for the upcoming farming season. With ZMD predicting favorable rainfall for 2024/25, our small-scale farmers are gearing up for success. Meet Paul Tembo, a principal lead farmer from Nzamane Chiefdom, Eastern Province. Paul is already preparing his fields by applying the knowledge he gained from training with COMACO.
"The ZMD forecast gives us confidence in the coming rains. Now is the perfect time for minimum tillage through ripping. Most of the farmers I work with have already ripped their fields, and compost manure is ready as we wait for the rains," Paul says.

Tree cutting has contributed to climate change, leading to effects like droughts in Zambia. To combat this, COMACO educates those involved in deforestation on its harmful impacts. In Kaindu Chiefdom, Mpusu, Central Province, honorary forest officers are taking steps by holding sensitization meetings to raise awareness about the importance of protecting trees.
Elliuda Mafuta, an honorary forest officer trained by COMACO, explained: 'We all need trees. They produce oxygen, improve our health, provide shade, shelter, nutritious foods, and life-saving medicines. But forests are under threat from deforestation. We’ve chosen to educate communities here to help them understand forest conservation and management, so they can see how deforestation harms the environment.'

The COMACO extension team in Serenje district, Central Province, alongside the Forestry Department, has been conducting sensitization meetings with small-scale farmers, educating them on the dangers of late bush fires and the importance of preserving forests and trees. By protecting these natural resources, farmers can maintain ecosystem balance, ensure sustainable farming practices, and safeguard their livelihoods.
Farmers who attended the meetings expressed gratitude, noting that they were previously unaware of the vital role forests play in their community. With the knowledge gained from these sessions, they now believe that people will avoid bush burning, understanding that forests provide essential resources like wild foods, including caterpillars and mushrooms.
Febby Mulenga, a farmer from Chief Mailo’s Chiefdom stated, "I have greatly benefited from selling mushrooms and caterpillars to COMACO, all because of conserving the forest, which is the source of these foods."
