COMACO collaborates with 86 chiefdoms, working closely with traditional leaders to empower 335,230 small-scale farmers in transitioning to climate smart agricultural practices. Central to this approach is agroforestry.
At a food fair in his chiefdom, Chief Chibale highlighted the importance of growing and protecting fruit trees to improve nutrition and income. He thanked COMACO, CIFOR-ICRAF, and the government for their combined efforts to address food security and nutrition.
“The knowledge gained on growing and protecting fruit trees will go a long way in ensuring improved nutrition and income generation for my people,” Chief Chibale stated, while emphasising the impact of these initiatives on his chiefdom.
The food fair focused on agroforestry and preserving indigenous foods to boost dietary diversity and provide diverse sustainable income for small-scale farmers, enhancing food security and maintaining cultural heritage.

(Part 2) COMACO recently empowered farmers from the Chengelo Cooperative in Central Province by providing 777 plastic sleeves for growing Gliricidia plants, a vital resource for agroforestry. This initiative is expected to result in the planting of 388,500 seedlings.
Tenson Tereshi, a 62-year-old small-scale farmer from the Chingelo Cooperative in Chitambo District, has seen his life improve through Gliricidia farming. "I used to harvest only 15 bags of 50 kg maize, but after incorporating Gliricidia into my field, I started harvesting at least 25 bags, allowing me to feed my children and send them to school," he said.
Similarly, another small-scale farmer, Mirriam Chimese, aged 52, began her journey with COMACO in 2002 under the One-Green Cooperative in Central Province. "Being a beekeeper, I am eager to start planting Gliricidia because I know that it also helps attract bees and other pollinators," she said.

Community Markets for Conservation (COMACO) has today reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Zambia’s forestry resources by donating two Toyota Hilux vehicles to the Forestry Department under the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment - Zambia The handover ceremony, held at the Ministry's headquarters, underscores COMACO’s unwavering support for Government in combating illegal timber harvesting and charcoal production.

The Honorable Mike Elton Mposha, MP, received the vehicles on behalf of the Ministry, expressing gratitude for the valuable contribution.

Speaking at the event, COMACO Chief Operations Officer, Richard Mumba, emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing environmental challenges: "This donation reflects COMACO’s strong desire to work hand-in-hand with the Forestry Department to manage and protect Zambia's forestry resources. Conservation is a collective effort where partnerships and collaboration make it possible to achieve meaningful impact."

The vehicles will enhance the Forestry Department's operational capacity, enabling more effective enforcement and monitoring of forestry resources and implementation of needed regulations across the country.

(Part 1) With the rainy season approaching, we are excited to launch our 100 million Tree Campaign. So far, we’re at the 70 million mark and trying to close the gap as we look for added funding.

This year, we’re encouraging farmers to plant Gliricidia sepium and Acacia polycantha, two excellent species that improve soil fertility through nitrogen fixation and from other key nutrients by farmers adding their leaves to the soil. This is part of our overall approach of promoting mulching, cover crops, crop rotation and minimum tillage.

Seeds for both tree species and planting materials have been distributed, and adoption has been rapid as farmers take lessons from their neighbors who have demonstrated the positive impact these trees have on their crops.
